By far, the majority of our service calls are because a customer has downloaded a virus.  A virus will show itself in your computer in one (or more) of several different ways:

  • You'll get lots of pop-ups.

  • Your computer performance suddenly becomes very slow.

In the background, a virus can do several things to your computer.  You may not even be aware of these activities:

  • It can surreptitiously dial out to another computer or server and pass on your private information

  • It can be remote control your computer to participate in a distributed denial of service attack.

  • It can disable your anti-virus software.

  • It can point your browser to a porn web site.

  • It can erase your hard drive.

 

If you suspect that you have a virus, run a total system scan using your Anti-Virus software.  The software should find, isolate, and remove any viruses that it finds. 

 

If the Total System Scan does not fix your machine, turn the machine off and call a professional (like Geek For Hire, Inc.) for help.
