4/21/08 - Three things to do this week

Here are a few things you can do this week to make your computer use more efficient.

  1. Reboot your computer.  This can free up more memory so that programs can run more quickly.  You should reboot your computer at least every few days.  To reboot your computer, simply turn it off at the end of your workday.  Then when you're ready to use it again, turn it back on.  While you're at it, turn off your printer too!
  2. Back up your hard drive - or at least your important files.  This should be done at least once a month, more frequently if your precious data changes often.  Burn your data onto a CD or DVD disk, label the disk with the content and the date.  Store the disks in a safe place.
  3. Pick up your keyboard and grab all those little bits of paper with your logins for various websites.  Write them all down in one place!  I've got mine stored in a password protected Excel file.  I've also printed it out and have stored it in a fireproof safe.

Geek For Hire, Inc. is proud to provide support to non-profit organizations in the area.  Several organizations are having Silent Auction fundraisers in the next few weeks, and we're happy to participate.  We've donated a Gift Certificate for one hour of service to each of the following organizations:  A Women's Work in Longmont on April 26th, Eldora Special Recreation Program in Eldora on May 3rd, Wild Bear Center for Nature & Discovery in Nederland on May 15th, and the Jarrow Montessori in Boulder on May 17th.  Please call if you'd like more information.

Happy Computing!
